A Christian man was convicted of sexual assault and harassment in India, after being arrested for allegedly raping a girl who worked as a babysitter.
The conviction was made public on Thursday in New Delhi’s court.
The 26-year-old man, identified as Gaurav Bhatt, was arrested on October 20, after allegedly raping the woman at a park in Rohtak, New Delhi.
Police said Bhatt had confessed to raping the girl, but he denied it when confronted by the girl’s parents.
The court, however, said Bhat had confessed after being subjected to torture, forcing him to give evidence and to give details of the sexual encounter.
The woman had worked as an independent babysitter for Bhatt for a month before he allegedly raped her.
The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was forced to sleep in a hotel room with Bhatt after the incident, police said.
Bhatt was then charged with sexual assault against her, as well as rape and false imprisonment.
According to the complaint filed by the victim’s parents, Bhatt repeatedly told them he had raped her, but was not sure if it was true.
The girl’s father, who is also the mother of the victim, later said Bhand raped her on September 11, three days after she came home from work.
